The Hamilton County Department of Education (HCDE) is in charge of all public schools in the Hamilton County, with a total of 78 schools throughout the area. As the seat of Hamilton County, Chattanooga holds 52 of those schools: 28 elementary schools, 14 middle schools, and 11 high schools. These include Red Bank High School, East Ridge Middle School, and Dawn Elementary. Additionally, the Chattanooga School for Arts and Sciences, known as CSAS, teaches all grades from kindergarten to grade 12, and has an exchange program with Tono High School in Japan.
Chattanooga is also home to 35 private and parochial schools. These include Girls Preparatory School (Also known as GPS), Notre Dame High School, and Bright School.
In post-secondary education, Chattanooga has many options. The University Of Tennessee at Chattanooga, also known as the UTC, is the second-largest campus in the University Of Tennessee system. This campus plays a large part in contributing to the local economy, with an enrollment of over 9,000 students. Chattanooga State Technical Community College is located a few miles from the UTC, and has recently claimed some of the best baseball and softball teams in the county. Other institutions include the private Tennessee Temple University, and the Southern Adventist University.
